Theories...

Hi guys, it's been a while since my last blog. I have been in a rehearsal process for the past few weeks, and I thought that I would be able to keep this going alongside my work... I was wrong. I have learnt from it though. Now we are into the week of draft submission so we are all guns blazing to get something in for that.

I had a great discussion with Sam about my areas of learning, and I do think I have them defined.

The three areas that I will be focusing on are

1.) Vicarious learning to improve a business partner relationship. - I am thinking of my relationship with my agent in a business sense, as a partnership. In order to improve this partnership we need to understand what each person has to bring to the table. For the purpose of my essay, I will be looking at some theories of business partnership and treating the partnership with my agent as purely a business concept. What does each person need to maximise the relationship, and make it a mutually beneficial relationship. (Bourdieu forms of Capital)

2.) Entrepreneurship. Maintaining a professional image - For me this is the most important area of learning. This ties in hugely with the concept of Web 2.0, especially in this current environment where social media is our only form of networking available at the moment. I tend to keep Facebook for my personal life, and Instagram for my professional life, so I am interested to see if there may be a theory that verifies the benefits of separation of social media.

3.) Unspoken Rules & Conventions. Are they non binding rules? Or are they a ritual. - This area for me ties into Anthropology, the study of human behaviour. I am keen to explore the conventions that performers tend to follow, how the came about, and why are they still regarded as important today. Also the prospect of a career ladder in the performers world, and how some disciplines have a sort of career ladder while others do not. How does that effect people's behaviour? I will tie this into the idea of Ethics and consider how these two ideas are interconnected.

I think the best way to approach my writing is to look for theories and facts around what I want to write about, then see if/how certain theories can be related back to my own ideas. As the theoretical viewpoint is where I struggle, and my knowledge of theories isn't great, I believe this is how I should begin. I think Google will be a big help in finding the theories, then it's just a case of finding the copy in a library online or somewhere where it can be properly referenced.

If any of you guys have any thoughts, or my ideas sparked and knowledge of anything you have previously researched, please let me know.

Thanks,

L

  1. HI Logan, looks like you have some great, in depth, AOL to speak about. They seem a lot more coherent and professional than mine were in M1 so thats great.
As I am not really from the ‘era’ of self promotion for pro work on social sites- I feel thankful that I didn’t have to do this to be in the chance for work or networking..the thought alone leaves me with dread as find those posts so superficial and weird! ahahah but I totally get that this is the day and age we are living in. This would also have a link to one of the lenses (connectivity) as I remember Adesola explaining this is about who in your field of work inspired you etc. And with the world being so large but so small in the fact we can connect with anyone we really want to nowadays online, this would be a good way of perhaps linking the two? just a thought?
Good luck with the drafts x

    1. Thank you for your reply. I like the idea of using that as a link to professionalism. Its definitely something to explore!

  2. Hey Logan! Great blog and Areas of Learning, they are very clear and you show a great link to the lenses too! I too found the theory side harder as well and it took time for the handbook to make sense! I hope the rehearsal process is going well and it can spark some more inspiration for your essay and artefact!

  3. Hi Logan,

Your three areas sound great and that you have a thorough understanding of them and how they relate to your practise.

I too have focused in my essay on Marketing as I feel it is crucial for self promotion. Instagram is a great platform to promote your professional image as you can connect and communicate with so many artists and creatives whom share the same discipline and goals.

From my study, when researching theory I would recommend using the Library Search on Uni Hub to electronically access books and journals and also Google Scholar!
