The Benefits of Learning With Others.
I have been thinking since tonight's session of the benefits of learning through helping others. I thought of it while Rebecca was speaking about intrapersonal connections. I find that a good way of learning is by teaching others. Say for example helping a fellow cast member with a dance routine, i find it helps me solidify what i have learnt while there is a sort of pressure to tech others. Interesting to think of the dance captain role for some of the dancers.
Even in other aspects of life. I feel as if teaching others is a way I like to work things out in my own brain and to teach myself through teaching them. Not sure what type of learning this comes under, I am just jotting it down while I have it in my head. I will consult tomorrow.
Hi Logan,
ReplyDeleteGreat to meet you on the call yesterday. This is a really interesting thought, I also feel that by teaching knowledge to someone else it then solidifies and clarifies it better for me too. This could fall under Kolbs Learning Cycle. (Kolb, D. 1984)
His four point cycle being: Concrete Experience, Observations and Reflections, Abstract Concepts, Actively Experiment.
Perhaps here you have started the cycle at Concrete Experience, having the initial knowledge which you intend to teach. You Observe and Reflect on how the learner retains information and how you intend to pass this information on. You take a moment to note down the knowledge (Abstract Concept) and then Actively Experiement by educating the learner with your knowledge, answering questions and creating a discussion.
I feel just by writing this comment, perhaps 'teaching' you about Kolb's learning theory and how your idea could connect with this theory that I have gained more understanding on how this theory could be applied, which is where this blog started!
I look forward to reading more of your blogs,
Ellie

Hey Logan,
ReplyDeleteIt was great hearing from you on the call yesterday! I loved that you said your practice is thinking of something positive each day - it really stuck with me and is a great way to keep upbeat during these challenging times.
Loved reading your blog post and Ellies comment above it is definitely something to mull over.
Look forward to your next blog,
Abi x
Hi Logan,
ReplyDeleteGreat thought, I totally agree. I find when teaching others I say things aloud that I didn’t realise I knew myself. Perhaps to do with tacit knowledge?
I’m also specialising in screen acting so it’s great to hear there’s someone else focussing on this.
Best of luck.

Hi Logan,
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate on this one! I find teaching a routine to someone often helps me solidify counts and details- it's interesting that you mentioned it could be as a result of feeling some pressure and comparing that with Ellie's comment regarding teaching as a Learning method. Lots of things to consider and I'm interested to see how you continue to reflect on this.

Hi Logan, This is a great thought and probably falls under Gardner's concept of Multiple Intelligences. I find it so interesting to see how different people learn as it's not something I ever thought about before starting this course. Look forward to reading more of your blogs x
ReplyDeleteHi Logan
ReplyDeleteThis is a great thought and I absolutely couldn't agree more, as I currently taking teaching qualification I have started teaching the work and it had really opened up how well I know the choreography down to counts, direction, steps and everything else in-between. I had one wobbly experience when teaching students and now I spend time as part of my prep I take time to teach out loud the work before hand and I find this really helps! Also really interesting comments to look into about what type of learning this may link to
